Food Bank Slips, But Still in Running for Grant
The “PBJ Campaign” has slipped slightly in the polls but Hoosier Hills Food Bank is still in contention to be one of 50 food banks to win a $60,000 grant at the end of the week. They are currently positioned in the mid-thirties.
Voting ends on Sunday, October 5, and the top 50 food banks at midnight that day will each win a $60,000 grant through Walmart’s “Fight Hunger. Spark Change.” online voting campaign.
Hoosier Hills Food Bank will use proceeds from the grant to provide a year’s supply of peanut butter, jelly and bread to at least six food pantries in the region including Area 10 Agency on Aging and Mother’s Cupboard and mobile food pantries in Bedford, Mitchell, Shoals and Orleans. Smaller amounts of PBJ will also be available to HHFB’s 90+ other partner agencies.
“We’re still in it, but we expect other food banks to make final pushes this week and we have to stay in the middle of the pack or we risk getting bumped,” said HHFB Executive Director Julio Alonso. “There’s not a lot of cushion and we need our friends to keep voting every day, and for new people to start voting. The fact is that 50 communities are going to win grants…we should be one of them! This grant will make a huge difference for us on many levels, we hope the community will rally behind us this week.”
People may vote every 24 hours through October 5 at http://wm8.walmart.com/Hunger/#/.
